Avante Headquarters
A building addition and modernization to an Edmonton institution that will be home to, and a showcase for, Avante Global Trade.

Located in the former DeRose building, the project is a modernization of the existing industrial structure, with a two-storey addition constructed of shipping containers. The design is based entirely on highlighting the shipping container construction and demonstrating the possibilities inherent to its form.

Working with Avante and SAT, the exterior massing is designed to reflect the functionality of the interior, with a focus on transparency through illuminating the interior spaces. The project also includes the division of the existing building into three separate tenants, with interior fit outs for two of those tenants.

Located in the CPR Irvine Industrial neighbourhood in Edmonton, the project site is the former home of DeRose Brothers, a local butcher and lunch spot known as an Edmonton institution.
The existing building and site have remained largely unchanged given their ability to support the needs of the base building tenants. However, the addition of the new structure to the south side will serve to bring a new identity to the site as a whole.

The existing single-storey building has been entirely refinished in black to create a sleek persona that resonates with the Avante brand. In complement, the two-storey shipping container addition is wrapped in black cladding.
The exterior design highlights the adaptability of the shipping containers by maximizing the opportunities for glazing and providing access to a rooftop terrace through an end-bearing shipping container extended above the parapet level. Wood accents incorporated through a trellis are cohesive with the language of the building through wood fins used to organize the glazing modules.

The space’s interior consists of a large showroom and reception area where clients can experience the shipping container construction solutions of Avante. Above the main floor, workstations and offices can be found along with the usual workplace amenities.

The floorplates are generally open and uninterrupted, again demonstrating the power of shipping container construction. Large expanses of glazing provide ample natural light along the perimeter of the addition’s design.
