Boag Lake Modernization
The modernization of an existing bungalow on Boag Lake in Strathcona County.

The Residence at Boag Lake involved the complete modernization of an existing bungalow. In a short two-week timeline, the holo-blok team developed a concept for a showpiece design functional for the large mixed-family client.

The project employs new glazing on the north side of the residence to maximize overlooking views to Boag Lake, while the public interior spaces are left unobstructed to accommodate large gatherings for entertaining.

The project site is a spacious lot adjacent to Boag Lake, Alberta. Left mostly uninterrupted, the site required only minor upgrades to the exterior circulation and outdoor gathering areas, where the unique T-shaped footprint allows for pockets of activities along the north perimeter of the building.

The exterior refresh included cutting back a large breezeway to expose the south-facing facade. Coupled with the addition of new windows, natural light is able to penetrate into the public spaces of the home, providing visual transparency throughout. The remaining exterior work involved remediating the deteriorating cladding.

The interior design maximizes views of the lake while providing a flexible space to suit the client’s needs by reconfiguring the dining, kitchen and living areas into a singular undivided space. This space, the heart of the home, opens to the outdoor amenity area to the north of the site, between the house and Boag Lake.
To maximize functionality throughout the house, the existing three bedrooms were reconfigured with practicality at the forefront. holo-blok tested new workflows for as-built conditions using the new SiteScape app to capture existing conditions with an iPhone.
