Westmount Community Hall Modernization
Renovations to a community league building in the mature neighbourhood of Westmount in Edmonton, making the building more accessible and better able to meet the needs of the community.

holo-blok was retained by the Westmount Community League to the design the upgrades of their community league hall. The upgrades involved an overhaul of the public washrooms, kitchen and bar, as well as exterior upgrades to the site and envelope.

Delivered through the City of Edmonton’s Community Group Led Construction Projects initiative, the project team worked closely with the construction manager to ensure the limited project funds would stretch as far as possible. The project was completed in the fall of 2023.

The existing project site was reconfigured to allow for dedicated barrier-free parking stalls with the ramping necessary to ensure access for community members of all abilities. Additionally, the project team addressed the site’s drainage issues.

The design required minor exterior upgrades, repairing various parts of the building envelope and refreshing the exterior finish. In response to stormwater drainage needs, the project called for the replacement of the gutters and integration of proper downspout routing to eliminate site hazards, particularly in the winter.

The hall’s washrooms were completely reconfigured, to both maximize the number of stalls and ensure the requisite number of barrier-free stalls were available. The building utilizes a gender-neutral approach through the provision of private washroom stalls and shared sink stations.
The kitchen and bar spaces have been refreshed with new millwork and are reconfigured to maximize functionality, helping to serve the needs of the community league and its patrons moving forward.
